Cocker Spaniels were bred to flush woodcock from dense cover, and they still have a busy nose and a constantly wagging tail. They are one of the most popular family dogs thanks to their affectionate, cheerful nature.
There are two related breeds: the English Cocker Spaniel and the smaller American Cocker Spaniel, which has a fuller coat. Working-line English Cockers are especially energetic. Both need regular grooming and plenty to do.

Gentle, sociable, and people-focused. Cockers like to be close to their family and can become anxious or vocal if left alone for long periods.
🎾 Exercise
About an hour a day of walks and off-lead running in safe areas, plus retrieving and sniffing games. Working-line dogs need more.
🪮 Grooming
Brush several times a week to prevent mats, especially on the ears, legs, and belly. Most owners have the coat trimmed every six to eight weeks. Check and clean the long ears weekly.
🎓 Training
Keen to please and food-motivated, so they respond well to reward-based training. Start recall and retrieve games early to channel their instincts.
🥣 Feeding
Measured meals with limited treats. Cockers gain weight easily if they are not exercised enough.

Ear infections
Long, heavy ears trap moisture. Dry them after swimming and check them weekly.
Eye conditions
Progressive retinal atrophy and other eye problems occur; responsible breeders eye-test parents.
Hip dysplasia
Choose puppies from hip-scored parents.

An inherited kidney disease in English Cockers; DNA tests are available for breeders.
