Boarding Kennels, Catteries, or Pet Sitters?

When you travel without your pet, you need someone you trust to care for them.

Each option suits different animals.

Kennels and catteries

Licensed kennels and catteries provide professional care. Visit beforehand to check cleanliness, space, and how staff interact with animals. Most require up-to-date vaccinations.

Pet sitters

Sitters care for pets in your home, which can be less stressful for cats and older pets. Check references, insurance, and background checks.

Home boarding

Some carers look after dogs in their own homes, often a good option for sociable dogs.

Prepare

  • Leave food, medication, and instructions
  • Provide vet contact details and consent for treatment
  • Bring familiar bedding and toys
  • Do a trial stay

Choosing for your pet

Consider your pet’s personality and needs. Many cats prefer staying at home with a sitter, as change is stressful for them. Sociable dogs may enjoy kennels or home boarding with other dogs, while anxious or elderly dogs may cope better at home. Pets with medical needs require a carer confident with medication. Book early in busy holiday periods.

This is general pet-care information, not veterinary advice. Every animal is different — if you are worried about your pet's health or behaviour, contact your veterinarian. In an emergency or a suspected poisoning, call your vet or an animal poison-control line immediately.
