Ear Infections in Dogs: Signs and Prevention

By Leo Anand · Published Oct 19, 2026 · 5 min read

Ear infections are one of the most common reasons dogs visit the vet. Dogs’ ear canals are L-shaped, which traps moisture and debris.

Allergies are a frequent underlying cause.

Signs

  • Head shaking or tilting
  • Scratching at ears
  • Redness or swelling
  • Bad smell
  • Discharge
  • Pain when ears are touched

Why it needs a vet

Infections can be bacterial, yeast, or caused by mites or foreign objects like grass seeds. Your vet will examine the ear and choose the right treatment. Using the wrong drops can make things worse, especially if the eardrum is damaged.

Prevention

Dry ears after swimming and bathing. Use a vet-recommended ear cleaner if advised. Do not push cotton buds into the canal.

Recurring infections

Frequent infections often point to allergies. Your vet may suggest diet trials or allergy management.
