House Training a Puppy: A Practical Guide

By Hannah Pryce · Published Oct 23, 2026 · 7 min read

House training is one of the first big jobs with a new puppy. Most puppies learn within a few weeks to a few months with consistency.

Accidents are normal — puppies have small bladders and limited control.

When to take them out

  • First thing in the morning and last thing at night
  • After every meal
  • After waking from a nap
  • After play
  • At least every one to two hours for young puppies

Reward success

Go to the same spot outside, stay with your puppy, and wait calmly. As soon as they finish, praise warmly and give a treat. Rewarding immediately is important so they connect the reward with toileting outside.

Handling accidents

If you catch your puppy mid-accident, calmly interrupt and take them outside. Never punish or rub their nose in it — it teaches them to hide when toileting, making training harder. Clean accidents with an enzymatic cleaner to remove smells that attract them back.

Overnight

Young puppies often need a toilet trip during the night. A crate near your bed helps you hear when they wake. See our crate training guide.

When to check with a vet

If a puppy suddenly regresses, drinks or urinates much more than usual, or seems uncomfortable, see a vet to rule out urinary infections.

This is general pet-care information, not veterinary advice. Every animal is different — if you are worried about your pet's health or behaviour, contact your veterinarian. In an emergency or a suspected poisoning, call your vet or an animal poison-control line immediately.
