Itchy Skin in Dogs: Common Causes
Persistent scratching, licking, and chewing are signs of itchy skin.
Finding the cause brings relief.
Common causes
- Fleas and other parasites
- Environmental allergies such as pollen and dust mites
- Food allergies
- Skin infections
- Dry skin
Fleas first
Fleas are the most common cause. Use vet-recommended flea prevention for all pets in the home. See our flea, tick, and worm prevention guide.
Allergies
Allergies often cause itching of paws, ears, belly, and face. Your vet may suggest treatments, tests, or a diet trial.
When to see a vet
See a vet if itching is persistent, causes sores or hair loss, or your dog seems distressed.
Home care
Bathe your dog only as often as needed, using a gentle, vet-recommended shampoo, as frequent washing can dry skin. Wipe paws after walks to remove pollen. Keep bedding clean. Do not use human creams or medications without veterinary advice, as some are toxic to dogs. A cone may stop a dog licking sore areas while treatment works.
This is general pet-care information, not veterinary advice. Every animal is different — if you are worried about your pet's health or behaviour, contact your veterinarian. In an emergency or a suspected poisoning, call your vet or an animal poison-control line immediately.
