Puppy Socialisation: The First Months That Shape a Lifetime
In this guide
Puppies go through a sensitive period, roughly from three to around twelve to fourteen weeks of age, when they are especially open to new experiences. What they encounter during this time strongly influences how confident they are as adults.
Socialisation is not about meeting as many dogs as possible. It is about calm, positive exposure to the world.
What to introduce
- People of different ages, appearances, and clothing — hats, beards, uniforms, umbrellas
- Household sounds — vacuum cleaners, washing machines, doorbells
- Outdoor sounds — traffic, bikes, children playing
- Surfaces — grass, gravel, tiles, metal grates
- Handling — ears, paws, mouth, and gentle restraint
- Car journeys and short periods alone
Keep it positive
Let your puppy watch from a distance first, and pair new things with treats and praise. Watch body language: if your puppy hides, freezes, or tucks its tail, increase the distance or slow down. Forcing a frightened puppy to “face its fears” can make fear worse.
Before vaccinations are complete
Many vets now recommend starting socialisation before vaccinations are finished, while avoiding high-risk areas where unknown dogs toilet. Carry your puppy to see the world, invite vaccinated, friendly dogs to your home, and join a well-run puppy class that requires first vaccinations. Ask your vet for advice for your area.
Puppy classes
A good class is small, uses reward-based methods, and lets shy puppies take things at their own pace. Avoid classes that allow rough free-for-all play or use punishment.
It does not stop at 14 weeks
Continue positive experiences through adolescence, when some dogs go through another fearful phase. See our guide to reading dog body language.
