Human Foods That Are Safe for Dogs in Moderation

Many owners like to share food with their dogs. Some human foods are healthy treats; others are dangerous.

Treats should make up no more than about 10% of daily calories.

Generally safe in moderation

  • Plain cooked chicken or turkey, without bones or seasoning
  • Carrots and green beans
  • Apple slices without seeds or core
  • Blueberries
  • Plain cooked rice
  • Plain, unsalted peanut butter without xylitol

Foods to avoid

Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, alcohol, caffeine, and anything containing the sweetener xylitol can be toxic. See our full guide to foods toxic to dogs and cats.

Preparation matters

Avoid seasoning, sauces, and fatty foods, which can upset stomachs or trigger pancreatitis. Cut food into appropriate sizes to reduce choking risk.

Watch for reactions

Introduce new foods in small amounts. Stop if your dog has vomiting, diarrhoea, or itching, and speak to your vet.
