Wet vs Dry Cat Food: Which Is Better?

By Leo Anand · Published Sep 8, 2026 · 6 min read

Cat owners often debate whether wet or dry food is better. The good news is that both can be healthy, as long as the food is labelled “complete” for your cat’s life stage.

Many owners feed a mix of both.

Benefits of wet food

  • Higher moisture content helps with hydration
  • Often lower in calories per mouthful
  • Can help cats with urinary or kidney issues (on vet advice)
  • Appealing to fussy eaters

Benefits of dry food

  • Convenient and lasts longer once opened
  • Usually cheaper per meal
  • Can be used in puzzle feeders
  • Some dental diets are designed to reduce plaque

Hydration matters

Cats evolved to get much of their water from prey, and some do not drink much. Wet food, water fountains, and several water bowls placed away from food can increase intake.

Portion control

Dry food is calorie-dense and easy to overfeed. Weigh portions and follow guidelines based on your cat’s ideal weight. See our guide to reading pet food labels.

Changing foods

Change foods gradually over a week or so to avoid stomach upsets. Ask your vet before changing diets for cats with health conditions.

This is general pet-care information, not veterinary advice. Every animal is different — if you are worried about your pet's health or behaviour, contact your veterinarian. In an emergency or a suspected poisoning, call your vet or an animal poison-control line immediately.
