Allergic to Pets? Ways to Reduce Symptoms

By Sam Whitlow · Published Oct 20, 2026 · 6 min read

Pet allergies are caused by proteins found in skin flakes (dander), saliva, and urine — not just hair.

Breeds marketed as hypoallergenic may shed less, but they still produce allergens.

Before getting a pet

Spend time with the breed or individual animal before committing. Allergy testing with a doctor can confirm what you react to. Reactions can vary between individual animals.

Reducing allergens at home

  • Keep pets out of bedrooms
  • Use a HEPA air purifier
  • Vacuum often with a HEPA filter vacuum
  • Wash pet bedding weekly
  • Choose hard floors over carpets where possible

Grooming

Regular grooming, ideally by a non-allergic family member and outdoors, reduces loose dander.

Medical treatment

Antihistamines, nasal sprays, and immunotherapy may help. Speak to a doctor about options.

Living with allergies and pets

Many people with mild pet allergies live happily with animals by combining several measures. Washing hands after handling pets, keeping pets off furniture, and changing clothes after cuddles can help. Symptoms may change over time. If you have asthma, talk to your doctor before getting a pet, as pet allergens can trigger attacks.

This is general pet-care information, not veterinary advice. Every animal is different — if you are worried about your pet's health or behaviour, contact your veterinarian. In an emergency or a suspected poisoning, call your vet or an animal poison-control line immediately.
